Current Board
Dr. Daniel Nam graduated from UCLA with a BA in Piano performance in 1996 and then UOP School of Dentistry in 2002. Currently he has his private practice Oakland, CA. He served as the Director of Dental Services at the Berkeley Free Clinic from 2003-2017 and then started Just Health 510 in July 2017. Dr. Nam is currently a staff dentist at Alta Bates Medical Center-Summit and Ashby campuses working with the Emergency Department, ICU, oncology and rehab departments. He is also on the Clinical faculty at UOP School of Dentistry where he teaches on Monday evenings. Dr. Nam is committed to alleviating suffering from dental pain, trauma, and fear. He is a diehard fan of UCLA sports and enjoys playing tennis, golf and his piano in his spare time.
Matt Nickell is a government attorney who defends and enforces the civil rights of individuals living in greater Los Angeles. He previously worked in legal services representing low income tenants and homeowners facing eviction and foreclosure. Matt received a B.A. from the University of California, Berkeley and J.D. from Harvard Law School. He believes strongly in the power of law and policy to empower underprivileged individuals and communities, and sees access to quality health care and the fight for social justice as inextricably linked.
Ashley is a general dentist in Seattle, WA. She earned a B.A. in Public Health and minor in Global Poverty from UC Berkeley. Ashley graduated from the University of the Pacific Arthur A. Dugoni School of Dentistry and assisted on the delivery of Teledentistry and the Virtual Dental Home model at the Pacific Center for Special Care. She then completed a MPH at Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health focusing on healthcare management and hopes to continue working for non-profits and health centers to address oral health inequities.
Chloe Tsang is a San Francisco native. She studied Molecular Environmental Biology and Global Poverty and Practice at UC Berkeley. She went on to dental school at A.T. Still University, Arizona School of Dentistry and Oral Health where she received her DMD and MPH. Her passion for whole person health lead her to pursue residency at Brookdale Hospital in New York. She currently practices in NYC and remains committed to social justice and advocacy in her community and back home.
Swathi Bhuma is an organizer & policy advocate in the SF Bay Area. She works to deepen the ability of directly impacted individuals to advance programs and policies on issues of tenant protections, affordable housing, and other intersecting areas. Throughout the years, she has developed extensive experience in community power-building, legislative advocacy, and leadership development. She is a graduate of UC Berkeley and a certified consultant in human-centered design and lean methodologies.
Shruthi Bhuma is an organizer & policy advocate based in the SF Bay Area. For several years, she has worked with working-class communities to build their knowledge of existing resources and leadership in policy campaigns regarding housing justice as well as other overlapping issues. She received her BA from UC Berkeley and holds multiple certifications in quality improvement, lean methodologies, and design thinking from IDEO, the Institute for Healthcare Improvement, and the Acumen Foundation.
Kelly Vitzthum is a founding board member of Just Health 510 and a current resident in hospital dentistry and special patient care at UCLA. She previously worked as a policy analyst for a nonprofit consumer health advocacy organization and has had various research and work experiences in the areas of tobacco control, homelessness, health literacy, telehealth, oral health care access, and quality improvement in the health care safety net. Kelly has a BA from UC Berkeley, an MPH from the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, and a DDS from UCLA.
Alex Hsu was born in Taiwan, and he moved to Texas and eventually settled in Oakland with his family. He has a background in Information Systems from NYU, and he was one of the fifth employee of an internet startup, LinkExchange, that was sold to Microsoft in 1999. He currently invests in local businesses in Oakland, Las Vegas, and New York City. He is on the board of trustee of the Park Day School, a progressive school in Oakland, as well as an internet advertising company based in Las Vegas, and being part of a development team, Z Life, also based in Las Vegas.
Andrew Whang is a software engineer at Facebook. He graduated from the University of California, Berkeley with a B.S. in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science. He has been involved in direct service nonprofit work in the Bay Area since 2008. He is grateful for the opportunity to provide comprehensive health services to underserved communities.
Antoinette Siu is a Bay Area journalist covering business and policy. She holds a B.A. in peace and conflict studies from the University of California, Berkeley and M.A. in journalism from Syracuse University as a Newhouse fellow. Antoinette has been published in The Washington Post, San Francisco Examiner, San Francisco Business Times, International Business Times and featured on local and state radio.
Past Board
Erin was raised in the Pacific Northwest and has resided in the Bay Area for the past two decades. She first developed a passion for addressing systemic inequalities through studying Sociology and Critical Social Thought at SF State. Erin spent several years caring for people - from hospitality to education to dentistry. She began working with Dr. Nam as the office administrator for his private practice in 2015. She has since transitioned to being home with her two kids where she has nearly perfected her sourdough bread and loves to bake pumpkin anything.
Erin joined Just Health 510 in 2017 just after they obtained their 501(c)3 status and as they prepared to open the clinic. It was her pleasure to spend the next 3 years providing daily operational support while also focusing on fundraising.
Dr. Jean Marie Calvo is a pediatric dentist devoted to caring for the underserved and educating the future leaders of pediatric dentistry. Dr. Calvo completed her undergraduate degree at the University of Southern California with a degree in economics. She received her dental degree from University of California San Francisco School of Dentistry. During her DDS training Dr. Calvo took a yearlong leave of absence to be a Zuckerman Fellow at the Harvard Kennedy School of Government and complete her Masters of Public Health degree. Following her DDS and MPH, Dr. Calvo continued her training at UCSF completing her certificate in pediatric dentistry while also serving as Chief Resident and receiving the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry Resident Recognition Award.
Dr. Calvo’s diverse education and training has informed her systems level approach to pediatric dentistry and has inspired her to seek to better understand how community and policy level factors influence the health of the children and families we serve. Dr. Calvo’s current academic endeavors include enhancing the UCSF pediatric dental residency through increasing resident exposure and training in public health, continuing her research on patient safety, and mentoring trainees. Dr. Calvo provides prevention focused and evidence based dental care to children at the UCSF Mission Bay Faculty Practice and in the UCSF Mission Bay Operating Room.
DJ is a physician for the San Francisco Public Health Department in the division of Street Medicine and Shelter Health, providing low barrier care to the most vulnerable unhoused members of the San Francisco community. He completed his BA and MPH at UC Berkeley and his MD and residency at the University of California San Francisco.
DJ remembers when Just Health 510 was just a crazy late night idea at the end of a long Suitcase Clinic/Berkeley Free Clinic shift. He is so happy to have taken part in bringing that idea to fruition and continuing to support its growth and development.
Akhil Reddy, DDS is an entrepreneur and practicing dentist in Dallas, TX. He is the managing partner of The Dental Method, a boutique dental group. He is the CEO of Reddy Vineyards, a leading vineyard and winery in Texas. Akhil Reddy is an Eagle Scout and he was born and raised in Lubbock, TX. He received his DDS at University of the Pacific Arthur A. Dugoni School of Dentistry in San Francisco, CA in which he graduated at the age of 23. Thereafter he moved to Dallas, TX and co-founded a Dental Service Organization and affiliated private practices. He then completed a private equity transaction in 2017 and went to focus on his boutique practices and winery. He completed the UC Davis Wine Executive Program with the University of California Graduate School of Management. Akhil Reddy has served on various boards and advisory including the University of the Pacific, Just Health 510, San Francisco technology startups, California Dental Association, and Health Wildcatters.
Akhil was introduced to Just Health 510 founder, Dr. Daniel Nam in 2014 by Dr. Craig Yarborough of University of the Pacific. He was immediately captivated by the vision and passion for helping the underserved that Dr. Nam had so willingly dedicated his life to. He joined the founding board of Just Health 510 in the capacity of advising on operating structure and executive strategy.
